Artist Statement -  Béatrice de Diego

I don't chase ideas. They come to me.

Shapes, color, light, atmosphere and small details are part of my everyday life. I notice them in nature, in everyday moments, in conversations and while traveling. Often it is a brief impression that stays with me and makes me curious. Sometimes it becomes something new right away. Sometimes it takes weeks or even months to find its form.

For me, every work begins long before I enter the studio. Thoughts and images stay with me for a long time before I start making them. In the studio I look for a form that feels true to what I have been carrying inside. I work intuitively and give the materials space to become part of the process. Some works come together quickly while others need more time. When something doesn't feel right I put it aside until the next step becomes clear.

I see beauty everywhere. In a wild meadow, in geological formations, in plants, animals, light, color and in the small moments of everyday life. I'm fascinated by the relationship between form, movement and atmosphere. Looking closely is what keeps giving me new ideas.

For me, a work is finished when it feels right. When I feel a sense of calm, I know everything has found its place. That's when the work begins to speak for itself.

From that moment on, the work begins ist own journey. It meets new eyes, new thoughts and new emotions. To me, that’s where the real power of art begins.
